Inspiration.  That’s the final assignment for my Advanced Pro class with Brooke Snow.  Let me just say that this class has been AH-Mazing.  It’s grown me in ways far beyond behind the camera and computer.  Brooke has made nudges into areas of my life that are going to last much longer than I really anticipated when I signed up this spring.  I’ve already implemented new life habits and made changes to my business.  These things are making a difference, so I’m the one feeling really inspired right now.

That being said, my assignment was to document something (else) that inspired me.  While I don’t bring my personal life into my business world very often, this may be a good exception. My boyfriend, Gerrit, has a love for his family that is unparalleled to anything I’ve ever known before, and quite simply, the way he interacts with his nieces and nephews (well, all kids actually) IS JUST AMAZING.  Now, I know you’re thinking…”She’s the GIRLFRIEND!  She’s a bit prejudiced, don’t you think?!”  But it’s true.  I’ve been told by other people WITH kids how much their children love him, so I’m not just looking at him with heart-shaped goggles.  :)

So for this shoot, I wanted to highlight Gerrit’s relationship with a few of his nieces and nephews.  Two more kiddos live in Canada, so they couldn’t be a part of the project.  :(  Gerrit actually lives with this family, so he knows them really well.  Most of the time he spends with them is spent playing games or doing active things, so I really wanted to make sure to include a softer approach, with the hopes that this would make a nice portrait for him now (and the kids someday!)   I still planned some games and a few creative poses, so that the kids didn’t get bored.

The location we used was my friend’s property, and yes…the mountain was real.  :)

He inspires me.  Can you see why?

Oh. My. Averie.

Let’s just say, I’ve been wanting to get my lens on this little girl for quite a while.

I finally got my chance. (Insert evil photographer laugh here.)

Wow. Those eyes. Those cheeks. Those little baby legs. And those piggy tails.  Yep. I was putty in her hands. Oh, right…and it doesn’t hurt that the parents are beautiful too!

Thanks Josh and Nat for a great day with your amazing family!

XOXO,
Coco

This weekend, I had the honor of completing my second assignment for Brooke Snow’s Advanced Pro class, and this week, my couple contained another photographer friend, and that made me everything from extremely giddy to EXTREMELY nervous!  I mean…shooting another photographer is one of the most challenging assignments ever, not to mention, this photographer is WAY talented.  Way.  Gulp.

Lucky for me, this couple is awesome.  Awe.  Some.

I had asked Nancy and Jason to pick a location that meant a lot to them, and one of the locations that they picked was Mississippi Avenue in Portland.  Nancy had lived on Mississippi when she and Jason had dated and when they were engaged.  When I scouted, I was able to find this little green area in the middle of the craziness that provided a calm retreat.

Now three, for Two…(okay, maybe more!)

xoxo~

it’s always better when we’re together [portland lifestyle photographer]

During the past few months, I’ve been hearing a lot about Brooke Snow and her Advanced Pro Photography class from some photog friends across the country that have been enrolled, and I have been DYING to take it too.  Well, my time has COME!  I’m officially a student again (for a few “lovely” weeks at least) and I couldn’t be happier!

I’ll be posting images each week on this blog documenting my assignments, so you’ll get to be part of this journey with me.  :o).

Week One:  This beautiful family and I planned for a “Day in the Life” shoot and I was thrilled.  They love the look of relaxed photos with the family totally in their element, and those were the memories they wanted to capture.  I planned a shot list around a family of 5, with twin boys and a young girl; however, I think being single myself, that I underestimated the energy level that two four-year olds and a two-year old could bring to the table.  These parents are to be commended, because by the time we were done, I was exhausted.  :o)

The GOOD:  I still followed the plan of getting outdoor shots and moving indoors for more quiet play and books, and this type of shoot meets the exact qualifications of what the client was asking for (hopefully!)

The LEARNING EXPERIENCE:  I pulled out all my tricks, but the boys weren’t into the group shots in their home turf, so I missed getting a variety of shots with everyone together…they were high energy first thing in the morning and very distracted by their own toys and yard.  I need to think through that more with this age group.

All in all, LOVED my first assignment and can’t wait for more!

Without further adieu….Meet Devon, Alex, Brock, Jack, and JoJane……

twice the love | portland newborn photographer

Ah.  Newborn twins!  Scrunchy.  Squishy.  Moldable.  Wrinkley.  TIMES TWO!

“E” and “E” were prayed for and eagerly awaited, so meeting them was truly a blessing.  These sisters are so loved by their big brothers and their parents, and getting to spend more time with this family was just so much fun.

But they gave me quite the run for my money!  Getting one newborn fed, to sleep and happily content for photos is one thing, but two is definitely a challenge.  One thing is sure, I learned a TON…(and have all the respect in the world for Momma!)

They grow so quick…sniff…
